Fears and Phobias
People are often embarrassed to discuss their fears and phobias, which is expected when the definition includes the term ‘irrational’.
Although the person with the fear knows this only too well, at the same time they can’t help but have the fear response. Symptoms vary from mild to severe which is why the person may avoid the situation at all costs. Finding ways to avoid the fear can then led to very limiting ways of life such as in the case or agoraphobia (fear of open places) or may simply mean opportunities missed, such as a foreign holiday in the case of fear of flying.
This area of therapy is one that I really enjoy and results can be achieved very quickly. Often people wait until they are in a position where they MUST get help – but why live with something that frightens you when you don’t have to?
I also would like to make it clear that the therapy DOES NOT involve you facing your fear. Those who have seen the Panic Room on TV may be worried about seeking treatment – although hypnosis was used as part of the treatment plan a lot more emphasis was on desensitisation – a technique that I do not feel is necessary. Be reassured my cupboards are not bursting with pictures of snakes or spiders in jars!
Here are some of the more frequent issues for which I see clients, coupled with some more unusual ones to give you an idea of the variety. Please feel free to call me if your fear or phobia isn’t on the list. They have longwinded names but for simplicity I’ve used the meaning –
• Spiders, birds, frogs, snakes, dogs
• Flying, driving, tunnels
• Needles, blood
• Buttons, fluff, certain colours
• Being sick and/or others being sick
• Heights
• Open spaces, enclosed spaces, lifts
• Relationships, commitment
Effective relief can also be gained for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome).
